Design exercises can sometimes be flights of fancy but, on occasion, elements of the fantasy can bleed into reality. General Motors has been posting some of these design sketches on Instagram for a while now, with a brutish take on the GMC HD Denali being the latest to arrest our attention.

While these sketches always exaggerate certain details such as fender flares and wheel size, there’s a strong possibility elements of the billboard-esque grille shown in this rendering may appear on the next-gen GMC Heavy Duty pickups.

After all, truck manufacturers are eager to beat each other over the head with ever-bigger frontage, locked in a perpetual mine-is-bigger-than-yours competition.

It also wouldn’t be surprising for a future Denali-grade machine to advertise the trim level loudly on its grille. Feedback has shown that a solid percentage of owners simply refer to their vehicles as “a Denali” rather than as a GMC. The trim is already hammered into umpteen different surfaces on vehicles so equipped; why not make it an integral part of the grille, too?

The post tags an account running the handle @bonifajeo which leads to an account that makes reference to exterior design at Cadillac. A quick internet search reminded your author that Bob Boniface is designer who’s toiled for both Chrysler and GM. His portfolio includes the bulbous 1998 Intrepid, the 2011 Chevy Volt, and a slew of recent Cadillacs including the very angry 2016 CTS-V. The angular Escala concept car popped up around this time as well.

What do you think of this design concept? Does it have the in-yer-face appeal you want in your next truck? Do you think it’ll simply scare animals and small children? Or would you rather see companies keep a lid on this type of stuff until they’re actually ready to build something? Sound off in the comment section below.
